Initial Points: Anchors of America's Grid
Exhibit on view at CLUI Los Angeles, from January 27, 2012

This new exhibit looks at the historic surveying infrastructure of the USA, and how literal monuments of place have evolved into expressive cornerstones of space. An exhibition by the Center for Land Use Interpretation in association with the Institute of Marking and Measuring with contributions by the National Museum of Surveying and the Principal Meridian Project. CLUI Los Angeles, 9331 Venice Blvd., Culver City.

There are certain LA-only things which need to be taken back, reclaimed from the eye-rolling urbanites and creepy novelty record collector types whose mission has been to take Los Angelenopalooza and make it something else, something unfun, or even worse, academic. I'm talking institutions like Clifton's Cafeteria, Dr. Gene Scott (RIP), and Bob Baker and his marionettes. Bob Baker learned the art of puppetry at the tender age of eight and went to Hollywood High School, fer chrissakes. He animated for George Pal and advised Disney! This writer may never again implore LA parents to do themselves and their spawn a favor; the Bob Baker Marionettes Holiday Spectacular comes but once a year. Baker selects from his personal collection of over 3,000 hand-crafted puppets to put on a show unlike any you've ever seen, featuring “everything from a trip to Santa's workshop to the eight days of Chanukah” as well as elves, wizards and old-timey carollers promenading before you. Yes, Eli Presser is a deity among string-pullers, but this old-school marvel will take you back in time, long before Rip Taylor upped his appearance fee, to a land of imagination and mystical make believe!

In about 1947, the New York–based photographer known as Weegee, famous for evocative crime scene images, moved to L.A. Perhaps in the aftermath of World War II, grisly, real-life murder tableaux had lost their appeal. Whatever the reason, Weegee gleefully turned his lens on Hollywood, trading in body bags for evening gowns, and began a decades-long love affair with the spectacles of decadent elegance, fantasies of glitz and eternal youth, and untamed optimism that characterized L.A. in the postwar boom years. Not for nothing, the Pacific Standard Time series of which Naked Hollywood: Weegee in Los Angeles is part starts in 1945. Moving from police blotter to society page is a punster's paradise, and Weegee's twisted humor and delight in everyday grotesqueries informed the work he did here. Experimenting with layered, spliced and otherwise distorted aftereffects, he turned up the volume on an already out-of-control appetite for images — with results ranging from the hilarious to the unsettling. Among the most remarkable are a suite of Marilyn Monroe portraits that presaged the Warholian repetition. In fact, these are installed close to a picture of Weegee with Warhol, and one of the Marilyns is on loan from Cindy Sherman, which explains a lot about the influence his dark and delirious aesthetic would come to have on the generations that followed. MOCA, 250 S. Grand Ave., dwntwn.; Mon., Fri., 11 a.m.-5 p.m., Thurs., 11 a.m.-8 p.m., Sat.-Sun., 11 a.m.-6 p.m.; thru Feb. 27; $10, free Thurs., 5-8 p.m. (213) 621-1745, moca.org.--Shana Nys Dambrot

Skylaire attended Jordan Maxwell’s lecture on August 6th and may be interviewing him shortly!

“A multiple hour discourse revealing never before disclosed experiences and information this legendary scholar has encountered over his 50 years of occult research, followed by an extensive Q&A session.” Jordan Maxwell is a captivating and outspoken Biblical and occult scholar/lecturer who is best experienced in person; this lecture is part of a series which will be released on DVD.  http://www.jordanmaxwell.com/events.html

Here is a recent bit I wrote about Jordan:

Sure, He Knows About Secret Societies, But Does He Know Even Snooki Gets $22,000 for a Lecture?

In a world where our biggest pop stars are thought to be Illuminati puppets (as evidenced by their ocular obfuscation and weird hand signs, and checkerboard patterns, butterflies and other allusions to mind control in their videos), one man has been Dirt Deviling the Satanic filth away for decades, beginning his quest in a library in Alhambra in 1959. Considered the world’s preeminent researcher of occult symbology,Jordan Maxwell’s work was the primary inspiration for the film Zeitgeist, which has been downloaded more than 100 million times. (Ice T, Afrika Bambaataa and Afrika Islam sampled Maxwell for their “New World Order Track” some years ago, as did Wu-Tang Clan in “The End.”) Maxwell — whose other areas of research include secret societies, astro-theology and the hidden roots of religion — has given hundreds of radio interviews and lectures (including private sessions with the likes of George Lucas and, it’s rumored, an $18,000 gig in Malta.) For the past few years, Maxwell has threatened that any appearance he makes may be his last. This afternoon, Maxwell will deconstruct his new two-part video series, Mazzoroth: The Saga and Lucifer: Bringer of the New Age, in detailed lectures followed by a Q&A.

Did you know that it costs $1 million to send a troop to Iraq or Afghanistan for one year?

As always, if you're planning or know of an event which would be of interest, please pass the info along!

IN THE WORKS: for those of you in the LA area who are truly intrigued by Fortean phenomena... I have been trying to find a location to hold a monthly gathering so that we might mingle and discuss current events of an unexplained nature. Our friends at the Edinburgh Fortean Society in Scotland have had great success with this! I have found a place with not only great time machine ambiance, but a great motto:

Dare to Live became, Dare to Dream, Dare to take chances.

For those who are interested, there is a Live streaming Geiger counter in Santa Monica.

We all know the world is going to hell in a hand basket... but there are small ways we can stave off the pricks... for instance...

No one knows the importance of wilderness like Republicans from Bakersfield, right? WASHINGTON (April 15, 2011) - The Wilderness Society today condemned the introduction of a bill by Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) that would roll back existing protections and place at risk tens of millions more acres of wilderness-quality but unprotected National Forest and BLM public lands. “This is the biggest attack on wilderness we have seen in the history of The Wilderness Society,” said TWS policy analyst Paul Spitler said of the Wilderness and Roadless Area Release Act. “This proposal flies in the face of values Americans hold dear with respect to the stewardship of our public lands. It also flies in the face of nearly fifty years of legislation designating new wilderness areas. Your favorite places where you love to hunt, fish or hike? Gone. Protection for our drinking water and habitat for wildlife? Gone.”

If passed, this legislation would open wilderness-caliber lands to destructive threats, including oil and gas development, uncontrolled off-road vehicle use and other unchecked development. It would essentially prohibit the Forest Service and BLM from managing pristine lands to protect their wilderness values. “That this proposal comes from the Republican leadership in Congress makes it more alarming,” Spitler said. “An attack of this magnitude does not represent the vision of Theodore Roosevelt or all the other great Republican leaders who love our public lands.” Donate here.

In the November 12th issue of LA Weekly, there appeared an article by Doug Harvey reviewing, amongst others, an installation by L.O.W.F.I friend Jeffrey Vallance as well as the Mantong and Protong Szukalski/Shaver exhibit. You can read it here.

Maja'sHope you were able to tag along with Maja!

If you're in Los Angeles on October 31st, why not do something that'd fit right into a L.O.W.F.I frame of mind? You can simulate one of our outings very closely if you were to join the Occult Los Angeles Tour called Maja's Mysteries: A Magical Excursion into Secret Los Angeles.

Los Angeles has always attracted spiritual seekers, some swimming down the mainstream of thought, others exploring esoteric tributaries. Maja's Mysteries is a guided excursion to some of the city's most fascinating spiritual sites hosted by Maja D'Aoust, lecturer and librarian at the Philosophical Research Society in Los Feliz, in association with Kim Cooper and Richard Schave of Esotouric. The tour's theme is "Consciousness impacts objective reality," a jumping off point for explorations of the nature of reality itself. Join Maja and Esotouric for a metaphysical journey into history, faith and magic in the Southland, with in-depth visits to some of the city's most compelling and seldom-seen spiritual sites.

Tour stops include: Downtown L.A.'s landmark 1927 Theosophy Hall, which is simultaneously an exquisite architectural time capsule and a thriving center for spiritual study where all are welcome to explore the wisdom of the ages in leaderless gatherings for which no payment is ever asked.

The local home of the Ordo Templi Orientis (O.T.O), the esoteric fraternal organization and religion that, under the leadership of Aleister Crowley in the early 20th Century, was rededicated to the Law of Thelema, with its twin directives “Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law" and "Love is the law, love under will.”

The Gnostic Society of Glendale (established 1928), where for more than 40 years our host Dr. Stephan A. Hoeller, the Bishop of the Ecclesia Gnostica and senior holder of the English Gnostic Transmission in America, has given Friday evening lectures exploring Gnosticism as living religious practice.

Maja says, "The mystery of magic in all its forms lives and breathes in us from the depths of our blood to the tips of our souls. From the Shamans of old to the modern day quantum physicists, the effect of our sheer will on the material world makes up a large part of what defines us as a species. Impacting reality with our consciousness, and conversely, reality's impact upon our consciousness lies at the base of every kind of magic from sympathetic voodoo to thaumaturgy. Making things happen with your mind, whether bringing the rain, healing a disease, invoking a God or prestidigitating an illusion, the art of conscious change is the very heart of the magical mystery of living."
Join us on the Maja's Mysteries tour for a one-of-a-kind Halloween adventure through the looking glass, and beyond.

"I am made of water. You wouldn't know it, because I have it bound in. My friends are made out of water, too: all of them. The problem for us is that not only do we have to walk around without being absorbed by the ground but we also have to earn our livings.

Actually, there's an even greater problem. We don't feel at home anywhere we go." - Philip K. Dick

Come discover Philip K. Dick's Fullerton, with our gracious host and tour guide, the venerable Robert Larson, this Monday, September 21st. Convene at 3pm at the corner of Chapman and State College, or contact me as soon as possible to iron out carpooling options from Lost Angles. (Feel free to forward this invite to any PKD enthusiast you may know in town.)

Bring a favorite PKD quote, passage or story to share at the last stop, which is, thankfully, a bar. One that PKD drank in (and wrote a scene or two about). Email me directly for more info: Skylaire@gmail.com.

CALEXICO, Calif. (AP) - The hottest thing on the griddle at the Las Palmas restaurant these days isn't the food — it's the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe that a cook says she saw on the griddle. Restaurant manager Brenda Martinez says more than 100 people have flocked to the small town of Calexico on the California-Mexico border to gaze at the likeness of the Virgin Mary since it was discovered as the griddle was being cleaned. Among the awe-struck was a group of masked Mexican wrestlers who arrived Thursday for an exhibition at a nearby swap meet. One, known as Mr. Tempest, says: "This is amazing. It's a true miracle." Since the discovery, the griddle has been taken out of service and placed in a shrine in a storage room. http://www.breitbart.com/article.php?id=D97T3NGO0&show_article=1

Ongoing... last night saw the “christening of the Gallows Gallery upstairs at Vlad the Retailer” showcasing the work of Eli Presser. “Reinventing classicism and mystical weight in the midst of striving consumerism through his magnificently subtle and stoic performances. One can almost imagine Presser presiding over a smoky Prohibition-era cabaret with his cigarette teetering from the corner of his mouth, entertaining artists, intellectuals and woeful souls. Thankfully he’s in the here and now, and our pavement is his stage.” Exhibition of his creepy masks, black ink drawings and puppets will be up about a month...
