Actually, our nation's capitol area (from Virginia to DC to Baltimore) and the rest of the world has had the International Fortean Organization (INF0) since 1962, became a non-profit educational society in '65. These guys are the orginal Fortean Society. Damon Knight and the Willis Brothers with encouragement from Philip K. Dick and Robert Heinlein, Robert Anton Wilson and others got Dover to re-print the collected works of Charles Fort to keep the work from oblivion. Daman Knight wrote the introduction and credits INFO for saving Fort from obscurity. Tiffany Thayer dropped dead in 1959 so that was the end of the Fortean Society's mag Doubt but all the papers of the Fortean Society was given to INFO so that the original Fortean Society could be re-born as INFO. With the encouragement of Heinlein, Bob Rickard and Robert Anton Wilson, the INFO Journal was born and was published for over 35 years in hard copy and has existed since in digital form as part of their record of their four major conferences a year. This year INFO held a two week conference from Dover to Rome aboard ship and on-site in places like Carnac, Majorca, Fatima and Pompeii; a long weekend in the Alleghany Mountains; a week-long debauch in the Caribbean looking for chucabras, ufos and ghost and their annual uber fortean conference FortFest at the American Visionary Art Museum (AVAM). This is a large, very active group with branches all over from Yap to Ontario. AVAM considers them part of their regular programming and this years fest, the 50th!, FortFest '09 is March 7-8. Come out for it Western Forteans and see Tesla's death mask and crop circle photos by Steve Alexander along with speakrs such as Budd Hopkins. You can get full details at their website http://www.forteans.com Sorry for the long post. Best of luck to LOWFI!

Out of all places for a Fortean Group, it seems to me that Our Nation's Capital should have one. I've had no luck so far. Disappointing. I look for non-specific weirdness-related groups every so often on different social networking sites for the capital region.

I applaud your initiative in forming this organization. Perhaps you should stop by the Fortean Times Forum and introduce yourself if you haven't already; you might find some interesting new people to exchange info with.

That said, does anyone out there know if anyone has tried forming a Midwest Fortean Group? I live in Wisconsin and know the definition of "strange"....
