Would you want your grandma living in an abandoned hospital so well known for its creepy atmosphere and alleged hauntings that it has been used in various Hollywood productions by folks like Rob Zombie and the makers of the horror film “Se7en?”

The L.A. Times says the 107-year-old Linda Vista Community Hospital may soon earn a new reputation once a proposed $40 million conversion is complete, transforming the abandoned building into a senior living home.

“People tell me it’s the most haunted place in L.A.,” said Maurice Ramirez, executive vice president of Amcal Multi-Housing Inc., the affordable housing group heading the hospital’s conversion. “Because it’s been empty for maybe 25 years or so, it becomes the subject of a little urban folklore about ghosts and things.”

The hospital’s caretaker Francis Kortekaas says he has experienced a few unusual moments over the years since Linda Vista closed shop in 1991, including when a sink seemed to turn itself on and off in front of his eyes, and when he felt a child’s hand reach out for his own, even though he was alone at the time.

“It felt like my daughter’s hand,” he told the paper.

Kortekaas has made some unusual changes to the site, including adding a fake prison cell, to make it more accommodating to potential filmmakers. Over the years, the property has been used by several entertainment productions, including the musicians Duran Duran, and as a set for the TV shows “True Blood” and “ER.”

Kortekaas says filming takes place at the hospital for nearly 130 days a year.

Perhaps most terrifying of all, the hospital has also been home to shooting locations for the critically panned films “Pearl Harbor” and the 2005 Adam Sandler remake of “The Longest Yard.”

But that dark legacy will have a shot at redemption once the extensive renovations are complete.

“It’s going to look like an upscale hotel,” Ramirez said. “People in the neighborhood will really see a transformation.”

“California–you’re supposed to be the out-there, wild ones!” Comedian Eddie Izzard remarked, after the California smoking ban was passed in bars. Once upon a time, all the loose cannons rolled west. I won’t take any responsibility for the Governator–who balks at legalizing pot, which would balance the state budget, but champions the idea of privitizing the state prisons. In Los Angeles, Mayor Villaraigosa can’t possibly cut police and fire services, which I’ve heard, account for 75% of the city budget (that can’t be right). I’m all for firemen–but here in West Hollywood, where both the county police and sheriffs have jurisdiction–I suspect it has more to do with the LAPD lobby than any pretense of public safety.

Who needs parks, or education, or health services? How is it, exactly, that a county which contains the 5th LARGEST ECONOMY IN THE WORLD–can be on the brink of bankruptcy?

Visiting that little old lady in Pasadena this coming October or November? Get her going with wild tales of the mighty Dero at this upcoming exhibit: Mantong and Protong: Richard Sharpe Shaver and Stanislav Szukalski. It’s at the Art Gallery – Pasadena City College from October 9 to November 14, 2009.

In conjunction with the Pasadena festival of Art & Ideas, Pasadena City College Art Gallery will present an exhibition that vividly illuminates two of the twentieth century’s most unusual theories of human origins and the artists who originated them: Stanislav Szukalski and Richard S. Shaver.

Szukalski (1893-1987) was a greatly acclaimed artist in his native Poland in the 1920’s and ‘30’s. Most of his life’s work was destroyed during the Nazi invasion of Warsaw. He relocated to the United States, where he developed his science of Zermatism, a comprehensive theory of human pre-history accompanied by an extensive body of drawings, writings and sculpture.

Richard Shaver (1907-1975) became famous in the post-WWII US as the author of pulp science fiction stories that he insisted were fundamentally true. His elaborate tales of malevolent creatures in underground cities that control human minds created a sensation in the science fiction world, as thousands of readers agreed with the truth of Shaver’s claims. In later life, Shaver became convinced that certain rocks were actually manufactured artifacts of advanced races that occupied earth eons ago. He developed unusual techniques to produce paintings and photographs based on these “rock books,” in order to reveal the true history of intelligent life on earth.

The Pasadena show will include a substantial amount of material by both of these artists that has never before been published or exhibited.

On February 21^st, “Judy” reported to UFO Digest.com that as she was driving on the 5 freeway northbound near the 91, she witnessed a strange object in the sky. Convinced it was absolutely not “an ordinary craft,” she sketched it, saying the “top part was spinning in circles.” She followed in by eye all the way to her exit, Carmenita Road. It hung over the very busy 5 freeway for over seven minutes.

My own UFO experiences have been varied and plentiful; this I attribute to having followed Stanton Friedman’s maxim of, “Watch the Skies!” since I was roughly six years old.

My first sighting was a doozy. After the Challenger space shuttle disaster, all of the country and many of its children were very excited when the next shuttle took off without a hitch. It was due to land at nearby Edwards Air Force Base (where, among other things, President Eisenhower was rumored to have met with aliens of a Nordic countenance back in the 1950s) and I demanded that my mother drive me up to spend the preceeding night on the grounds, so that we could witness America’s triumphant return to space in person.

Hundreds of people, including loads of personnel from the base, had assembled the night before the landing, camping out in their cars and trucks outside the perimeter of the landing strip. Directly behind my mother’s little Sprint was a monstrously masculine pick up, filled with off duty Air Force officers…
