Let me add my own giant owl story to this for the record.  About 4 years ago I was sitting outside on my porch with my cat Sheba and my other cat James Bond.  I heard an owl and I looked across the empty land behind my house where the hooting was coming from.  Out there on top of a phone pole, with my flashlight, I could see an owl that seemed to be at least 3 feet tall.  It made me worried for my cats and I took them inside.  It was the biggest owl I have ever seen, but I never could get a photo of it because it was somewhat far away and it was dark out.
