UFOs: The Project Beta Scandal
Many people unacquainted with the complexities of the UFO puzzle assume that all talk of attempts by “the government” to silence certain players in the field is nothing but outright paranoia and lies. Even within Ufology there are those who dismiss such stories as X-Files-like nonsense. How wrong they all are. Published in 2005, Greg Bishop’s book, Project Beta: The Story of Paul Bennewitz, National Security, and the Creation of a Modern UFO Myth, provided the field of UFO research with what was without doubt one if its most important contributions in years.
The subject matter of Project Beta was an unusual one; and while seasoned researchers were already aware of certain aspects of this dark and ultimately tragic affair, those unaccustomed to the events in question might have been forgiven for thinking that they had stumbled upon a high-tech, X-Files-meets-Robert Ludlum-style thriller. But Project Beta told a very real story – one that was as harrowing as it was informative.
In essence, the truth-is-stranger-than-fiction book related the saga of physicist Paul Bennewitz, who, after digging into Air Force and National Security Agency secret projects at Kirtland Air Force Base, New Mexico in the late 1970s that he believed were connected to the activities of sinister extraterrestrials and UFOs, was put under deep surveillance by the US military and intelligence services, and was bombarded by the murky world of officialdom with a mass of disinformation, faked stories and outright lies in order to divert him from his research – which worked. In fact, it worked rather too well, and led to the mental and psychological disintegration of Bennewitz.
Albuquerque, New Mexico and UFO subculture
by Norio Hayakawa:
New Mexico is officially the Land of Enchantment.
However, it seems that there are some who take this state motto almost literally and even believe that it is indeed the Land of Enchantment in more ways than one.
Some even seem to regard New Mexico as a state that has always been (and continues to be) filled with unexplained mysteries, especially when it comes to UFOs and paranormal phenomena.
Of course New Mexico has Roswell, world famous for its alleged 1947 “crash” incident.
What really took place in July of 1947 outside of Roswell no one knows for sure.
Perhaps there may be prosaic explanations to that incident.
But, again, no one knows for sure.
We have also heard about alleged crashes near Corona, also nearMagdalena and in the Plains of San Agustin, all in New Mexico.
The bottom line to me is that whether it really took place or not( i.e., the alleged crash of an “extraterrestrial” spacecraft, as had been so claimed and described by witnesses at that time) is really not what matters the most.
Besides, it seems that we do not have a single publiclyacknowledged solid, tangible, physical, irrefutable documentary evidence that we have ever been (or are being) visited by physical extraterrstrial aliens in physical extraterrestrial spacecraft.
But this does not mean at all that the UFO phenomenon does not exist.
In fact, the UFO phenomenon seems to remain a great mystery, even from time immemorial.
It’s just that we cannot come to any hasty conclusions equating this phenomenon with physical extraterrestrial visitations.
That’s the bottom line.

A Spy’s Guide to Santa Fe and Albuquerque
This book sounds very cool! From Amazon:
When thinking of New Mexico, few Americans think spy-vs.-spy intrigue, but in fact, to many international intelligence operatives, the state s name is nearly synonymous with espionage, and Santa Fe is a sacred site. The KGB’s single greatest intelligence and counterintelligence coups, and the planning of the organization’s most infamous assassination, all took place within one mile of Bishop Lamy’s statue in front of Saint Francis Cathedral in central Santa Fe.
In this fascinating guide, former CIA agent E. B. Held uses declassified documents from both the CIA and KGB, as well as secondary sources, to trace some of the most notorious spying events in United States history. His work guides modern visitors through the history of such events as the plot to assassinate Leon Trotsky, Ted Hall s delivery of technical details of the atom bomb to the KGB, and the controversial allegations regarding Los Alamos National Laboratory scientist Dr. Wen Ho Lee’s contacts with China.
Held provides background material as well as modern site locations to allow Cold War enthusiasts the opportunity to explore in a whole new way the settings for these historical events.
E. B. Held is a retired CIA clandestine operations officer. From 2002 to 2009, he was Chief of Counterintelligence at Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque. He currently serves as Director of Intelligence and Counterintelligence at the Department of Energy in Washington, D.C.
First NM UFO report of 2010
If they were at Eubank and Lomas and the objects were traveling south they would be going directly to KAFB area. That is not to say they weren’t UFOs, but they would have had to landed or flown over KAFB.

Anyone else experience a loud explosion yesterday?
This isn’t really fortean, but yesterday (12/16) at right about 3:30 PM there was a loud explosion type noise that shook my entire house. For a few seconds I actually thought the second story of my house was collapsing. The others in my house heard it and felt it, so I am not imagining things. I live in the canyon near KAFB so I assumed they were doing explosives tests, as they sometimes do. However, I never saw any smoke rising from the base like I normally do when they have tests. I have checked the Albuquerque news and found no reports on this at all. So if anyone knows what this was, please, leave me a comment or email me because I would really like to know.
Manzano Mountains fire, Manzano Base and Mars Canyon
Not terribly far from my house a fire has been burning in the Manzano mountains. I am not sure how long it has been burning now, but long enough to have burnt 275 acres. It could have been put out days ago, but the DOD (who owns the land) wouldn’t let firefighters in because they said there might be “unexploded ordnances” left over from the 1940s and 50s. Now, days later, they suddenly change their mind. What? Did the unexploded ordnances disappear over night? It seems fishy to me. I kind of wonder what might really have been going on over there and if whatever it was actually started the fire, rather than lightening as they claim.
While I was looking for photos of the fire I came across this page which is a pretty good page about Manzano base. It has several illustrations, like this one -
At first glance it looks right, but having searched the area on google satellite many times there seems to be a lot of missing stuff. Especially a lot of underground storage areas (or whatever those underground thingies are used for) there are a lot more than that map shows. That map makes you think there is only 1 mountain with shafts going underground, but that is wrong. The one shown is the largest and what is known as Manzano Mt, but there are also two smaller ones. Also missing is Starfire Optical Range -

I am wondering how much land is owned by the DOD because the area where the fire is burning is not on that map. It is actually fairly far from the base, meaning there is a lot more DOD land than what people consider to be KAFB and Manzano Base.
Just another strange little thing — the area the fire is burning at in the Manzano Mts is called Mars Canyon. Did the DOD name it that? While there are places in NM that resemble Mars, that area isn’t one of them. It is very green, not desert at all.

Robert Hastings, author of UFOs and Nukes, to appear on Coast To Coast AM, July 26 2009
Robert Hastings, author of UFOs and Nukes, to appear on Coast To Coast AM,
July 26 2009
Noted UFO researcher, lecturer and author Robert Hastings will make his second appearance on Coast to Coast AM on July 26, 2009. Hastings will discuss important declassified U.S. government documents which confirm a decades-long UFO-Nukes Connection that began with some 150 reports of UFO activity at the Los Alamos atomic weapons laboratory as early as December 1948. According to one FBI document, dated January 31, 1949, these incidents were “considered top secret by Intelligence Officers of both the army and the air forces.”
On July 16, 1945, Los Alamos secretly tested the first atomic bomb in the desert near Alamogordo; bombs two and three were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan on August 6th and 9th respectively, thus ending World War II and ushering in the Nuclear Age. Not long thereafter, according to the declassified documents, someone piloting “flying discs” or “flying saucers” began to monitor America’s atomic and thermonuclear weapons program on an ongoing basis.
Information uncovered by Hastings and other researchers reveals that intermittent UFO surveillance of Los Alamos, and other nuclear weapons-related sites, continued throughout and the Cold War era and beyond, occurring as recently as 2006. One Air Force document declassified in 1977 reveals that several UFOs maneuvered near Minuteman nuclear missile sites outside of Malmstrom AFB, Montana, in November 1975. Some of those objects, which alternately hovered and flew around at high velocity, were also tracked on radar and chased, unsuccessfully, by jet fighters. One UFO was reported by missile security personnel to have an “orange white disc” appearance.
These dramatic incidents occurred some six years after the Air Force closed down Project Blue Book—its supposedly definitive UFO investigation—claiming that it had terminated the project because there was no evidence that UFOs posed a threat to national security. However, another now-declassified USAF document states that “Reports of unidentified flying objects which affect national security…are not a part of the Blue Book system.” Of course, the American public was never officially informed of this fact, which only became known after the document’s release years later. Researchers now have evidence that national security-related UFO incidents, including the missile base cases, were actually investigated by the Air Force Office of Special Investigations (OSI) and various counter-intelligence groups.
Hastings will also present stunning testimony from a few of the 100-plusformer or retired U.S. Air Force personnel he has interviewed, who were involved in one or more of UFO incidents at nuclear missile sites over the years. According to those sources—which include missile launch officers, targeting officers, and maintenance personnel—missiles malfunctioned on a number of occasions, at different bases during the 1960s and ‘70s, just asUFOs were sighted hovering above their underground silos, or above their launch controlfacilities.
In other words, if nuclear war with the Soviet Union had erupted during any of those incidents, the affected missiles—which displayed what the Air Force refers to as a “Guidance and Control NO-GO” error—would have sat useless in their silos.
Even more shocking than those cases is the incidentreported by former Minuteman missile launch officer DavidH. Schuur, who was stationed at Minot AFB, North Dakota, in the mid-1960s. According to Schuur, late one night, a UFO actually activatedmost ofthe ten missiles he controlled. At the time, he was in the underground Echo Flight Launch Control Capsule, receiving frantic calls from missile security guards topside, who were reporting an extremely bright object in the sky which rapidly moved from missile to missile, briefly hovering over each one. As the UFO lingered, that particular missile’s “Launch in Progress” button suddenly lit up on the control panel in the capsule. Schuur states that he had to quickly press an “Inhibit” circuit button to override thelaunch command apparently being sent to each missile by the UFO.
Schuur told Hastings that he does not know whether the missiles would have actually launched, had he not disrupted their countdown sequence, because several other “spurious indicators” had simultaneously appeared on his missile-readiness display panel. Significantly, a nearly identical incidentoccurredin Soviet Ukraine, on October 4, 1982, according to two retired Soviet Army officers interviewed by ABC News in 1994. The reporter, David Ensor, later worked at CNN as the network’s Chief National Security Correspondent.
Hastings has researched the UFO-Nukes Connection since 1973 and has been invited to speak about his findings at over 500 U.S. colleges and universities since 1981. He has just returned from two international lectures, in Stockholm Sweden and Curitiba, Brazil. Underground Alien Bio Lab at Dulce

IS THE TOWN OF DULCE, NEW MEXICO THE LOCATION OF AN UNDERGROUND BASE GUARDED BY U.S. FORCES AND INHABITED BY A GROUP OF SINISTER EXTRATERRESTRIALS?
It is an absolutely incredible story, says Timothy Green Beckley editor of the Conspiracy Journal. Since the mid to late 1970s there have been all sorts of rumors about an underground laboratory beneath the town of Dulce. . .The UFO Hunters show on the History Channel recently featured the entire saga of what has been taking place on Native American soil, and a few days later George Noory and Coast to Coast AM plunged head first trying to make sense out of the various accounts that have surfaced.
Beckley admits that it is difficult to pin point exactly when this macabre saga started to develop. But he gives credit to an engineer named Paul Bennewitz for getting the ball rolling when Bennewitz says he was called to the area when aliens started to communicate with him over a radio receiver. He had been directed to Dulce after observing UFOs over Kirkland Air Force Bases nuclear storage facility. Standing near the tall cliffs outside Dulce, Bennewitz took a series of photographs showing unidentified craft diving into the mountains through what he claimed were entrance ways that could be opened and closed.
One individual in the U.S. military who was involved in the early stages of this investigation claims he engaged in hand to hand combat with ETs who had taken over level seven of the Dulce Base after a conflict with our soldiers. Another person involved in this epic committed “suicide” — or was it murder? -shortly after the “Dulce affair” was made public.
Much has been speculated upon regarding this sinister matter. But this is the complete work that contains balanced information and details from all sides. First time ever interview with Paul Bennewitz who was pushed over the edge never to return to sanity.
