Roswell’s UFO Fest receives $150,000 in city funds

The city of Roswell says it’s serious about the annual UFO Festival and finally approved funding for it late Wednesday.

The city council held a special workshop to approve a budget for this fiscal year which included $150,000 for the controversial UFO Festival.

That is the same amount as last year that was taken out of the lodgers tax fund.

There was some concern that the city might not fund the festival because it was not included in the preliminary budget. At that time, the city council wanted to look at whether the money was being spent wisely before funding it again.

The final numbers from the most recent UFO festival will not be ready until next month.

“We’ve got to be responsible to our citizens and also to the people coming to visit us… But I’ll guarantee I’m going to be watching it like a hawk, and I think you’ll see everyone at the table watching like a hawk, you’ve seen me yell and scream before, and I’ll yell and scream again,” said City Councilor Dusty Huckabee.

City officials says they will fully support the festival and that is why they decided to approve the funding before seeing the final numbers.

Description:
i was driving to pick up my room mate from work. i was on country club road heading east. in the sky almost directly east there was a bright light in the sky. having lived in roswell most of my life i am quite familiar with various types of air traffic and something about it struck me as odd. as i observed it i noticed it began to wobble. i watched it as well as i could (safely, given i was driving 45 mph) and something blue shot out of the direction of the object. it is still in the sky east of roswell right now at 11:28 local time. the blue ejection was sort of cone shaped, but looked like a series of circles that got larger towards the bottom… kind of like a snowman for lack of a better description. there were about 8-12 circles. this is a serious statement, not a joke or anything. thank you for your time.

Myself and three of my friends were outside a house smoking cigarettes. I was gazing up at the sky and noticed a point of light slowly moving. My first impression was that it was a plane, but it was not blinking and it was moving slowly. I get my friends’ attention and point it out. They too first thought the same thing as I, then thought maybe it was a satellite. It was not moving like a satellite either. It then stopped and turned from going north to east and approached a second ufo. They approached each other and one went westward and up while the other continued and seemingly entered a lower cloud which was lit up by light pollution. It dropped out of the cloud and disappeared. A few minutes later in the southern portion of a sky a bluer ufo (the others were pale and twinkly) started moving northeasterly. This one moved very slow. It moved directly west of us and stopped “in front of” a group of actual stars. It seemed to dim a bit and remained there. We got tired of straining our necks and eventually it faded out too. I think the UFOs are trying to resemble stars. When they are motionless and if you happened to look up you would never notice any difference. And they were moving slow so if you just happened to look up you wouldn’t even notice it moving! They have to be doing this on purpose and personally, I think its genius.

Triangle Craft seen between Clines Corners and Tijeras (1979)

Description:

25 minute event of a Triangle shaped object seen by many on Interstate 40 in New Mexico, between Clines Corner and Tijera,New Mexico In January of 1979, my family and I were driving home to Albuquerque from a cross country trip from Massachusetts after the Christmas Season. We had stopped in Tucumcari for a family bathroom and stretching break; this had been a 2000+ mile journey and we were on day 5, the home stretch. It was still light out and the sun was preparing to set in the hour when we left Tucumcari; the only thing unusual observed in the sky was multiple “Morning Glory” cloud formations that we passed under, on route 40. This in itself was unusual because “Morning Glories” are very rare. As it grew dark on the long stretch of road called Interstate 40, which cuts through from the boarder of the Pan Handle of Texas; straight through to Albuquerque, a 217 mile 3+ hour journey, at 9 years old you wonder if this trip is ever going to end. I can only approximate the time as being about 8:00pm when somewhere between Clines Corner, New Mexico and Tijeras, New Mexico on Interstate Route 40 an event that was observed by all 4 members of my family that we will never forget. Off in the distance a tower with anti-collision lights could be observed, it was on the left hand side of the road; it must have been a large tower because, the outline obscured in the darkness was visible from quite aways away. But there was something peculiar about this tower, above it was what appeared to be 3 spinning flashing lights; which when viewed at a distance were not attached to the tower. My mother then asked my father: ” __________ is that a Helicopter?” My father answered: “Maybe, but, My Mother: But What??? My Father: I dont know ____________ , ,,,,, its too windy,,,, I dont now what it is.. As we drew closer to the tower, (possibly a weather or communication station, no cell towers back then) we observed 1 or 2 smaller structures under the tower from a distance; and an unidentified air craft maintaining distance above the tower itself. At this point we were still a ways away from the tower station, but we could notice that this object was spinning; the approximate spin was about 90 per second or one complete revolution per 4 seconds. As we drew closer to the object we could see a distinct triangular form, which was in my estimation at least 100 feet across. It was at this point that this object began to gain altitude and loose altitude like a bounce on a trampoline. This increase and decrease in elevation was effortless and smooth, and at first it was in increments of maybe 20 feet; vertical up and down on the top part of the tower, and at no time did this object stop spinning. On this particular stretch of road it was very windy, the sheer alone was blowing tractor trailer trucks all over the road; but this object displayed no lateral vectoring what so ever, every time it raised in elevation or lost elevation the object did so in a straight ballistic line. (My fathers last duty in the Navy was a chopper trainer, he said that it was impossible for a helicopter to maintain position like that in those winds and not experience some lateral vectoring) The closer we drew to the object the more distinct it became, the object then moved slightly away from the tower and stopped in the center of the tower yard; at this point the object began to bounce gracefully in approximately 50 foot drops and 50 accessions, all the time still spinning. My mother tried to take some pictures of the object but as far as I know they never came out. My father and mother opened their windows, in order to try to here if the sound of a copter was present, but the only sound heard was road noise; and at this distance, if it was a helicopter one would have been able to hear the roar.It was now clear to my parents and I that this was no helicopter. As we were passing the tower station, the object leisurely and effortlessly moved and began to follow the highway; particularly our white suburban truck. At this point, my mother began to flip out, and begged my father to get off the highway, but we just kept driving. This is where the events of this night become weird, as we were driving the craft took up position above our truck and started to flash bright, and I mean bright flashes of directed light into our vehicle, particularly at me. They were brighter than any police or emergency vehicle or anti -collision light I have ever seen. First flashes of: yellow, than flashes of red, than blue, than green, than blue than red, than green and finally blue. After a while the object flew slowly away east bound in to the sky and out of sight straight up. This whole event from start to finish lasted from 20 to 25 minutes; I have tried using Google Earth to locate the precise location of where this event occurred, but much of the topography there has changed since I was a kid. What has bothered me over the years is that there were other witness to this event on that stretch of interstate 40 that night; none as far as I know, have ever reported this event. My current vocation is a Licensed and soon to be Ordained Pastor, there is a big risk for me to even speak out these events, but they must be told. This was not the only experience my family and I had in New Mexico; there was another one, just as weird.

Why I support the City of Roswell, but not the Roswell UFO Museum

This is stricly my opinion.
It is evident that the world-famous Roswell UFO Museum has always promoted only the extraterrestrial interpretation of the Roswell incident.
And, unfortunately, it seems to continue to exclude any speakers who differ from their view.
Of course, it can do anything it wants, since it is a private organization.

Fortunately, in recent years, some UFO researchers who bring up alternative explanations and views on the Roswell incident have been coming to the Roswell UFO Festival and have begun to give presentations.
I totally welcome the emergence of those researchers.
Unfortunately, of course, those speakers are not welcome to speak at the UFO Museum.
This is truly a shame.

I actually agree with Norio, but not for the same reasons stated above or at least not totally for those reasons even though he makes a good point.  Although, I support both, but in the ongoing feud I agree more with the city.  I will try to write more about that later tonight.

Finally some Roswell news

Two multi-million dollar projects are in the works that could bring an economic boost to Roswell.

Roswell’s famous UFO Museum and Research Center just broke ground on a ten million dollar, 30,000 square foot building.

Executive Director Julie Shuster hopes to have at least part of the building in place by next summer. “It’s exciting to move into the brand new building. The building itself will be a destination,” said Shuster.

Meanwhile, the city of Roswell is working on an amphitheater that could seat up to 8000.

The project is suppose to look like a crashed UFO and would become the largest entertainment venue in Southeastern New Mexico.

The price tag on the project is $1.2 million and city officials are hoping to have funding in place so the project can get off the ground.

The city also expects to have initial figures from the economic impact of the 2010 UFO Festival on Thursday.

Roswell News Blackout

This was a very strange year.  Normally at the very least the local TV news has a nightly blip about what went on that day at Roswell  –  this year I came across nothing, other than rumored (yes, rumored and not official) budget cuts for next year.  Let’s face it, Roswell would cut it’s own throat if it cut the UFO Fest budget too much.  There just isn’t anything in Roswell to attract people other than the fact that a UFO may have crashed near there in 1947 and being a place to maybe stop for lunch on the way to Carlsbad Caverns.

Also, there was the fact that the annual Larry King Roswell special did not take place due to his announcement of his up coming retirement.  So no CNN coverage.

Lastly, my friend Greg Bishop was not at Roswell this year and he is the only blogger I can depend on for reports during the festival.

I am not going to get in the middle of ongoing feuds between the museum and city of Roswell, except to say — STOP IT!  You are going to ruin it for yourselves and everyone else.

Perhaps we should start holding the festival here in Albuquerque.  People could drive south and check out Roswell if they want, but if Roswell itself is unwilling to take advantage of what should be a killer fest with lots of coverage, maybe some other city should.  Obviously, nobody in Roswell did much of anything to entice the media to come out there and I hear that the attendance was less than normal.  Should I mention the guest speakers?  Yes, I will.  Although, there was nothing wrong with the line up for both the city and museum, it seemed far less than normal.  Where was George Noory?  I am not a huge Noory fan, but even I know that his presence would draw many more people and get lots of media attention.

From what I have witnessed and heard from here in Albuquerque and comparing it to previous years — this was the most poorly put together Roswell festival in recent memory.  So I beg everyone that has any bit of control over next years fest to get their shit together!  Put aside whatever feuds you are having and think of the overall picture.

Roswell UFO Festival Budget Avoids Abduction

Proof I have been at least somewhat involved in this far too long — the first and only time I went to a Roswell UFO fest was for the 50th anniversary and it is now the 63rd.

Anyhow, read about the budget for the fest here.
