This appears to be a Giant Sequoia with a large fire scar at the bowel of the tree. Many of the Giant Sequoias, which are fire resistant (there are a couple Sequoia groves on the Sierra National Forest), have these type of scars that create an opening at the base of the tree. So you are looking inside the tree, actually…not at some indistinct something leaning against the tree, or walking away from the tree…IMHO!
