The problem is we think animals are just animals with no real intelligence. My veterinarian said," Animals do not think. They are a collection of instincts and physical need. They can't reason." I disagreed and still do. I have heard of examples of praying mantises setting traps for other insects using tools it had fashioned from plant life.

I had a mother cat who liked to jump up on the counter top and look for scraps of food. When I saw her do this I would give her a squirt from a water jug. She hated this and would quickly jump down. One day when her kitten jumped up on the counter and I reached for the water bottle, she jumped on the counter and removed the kitten from the counter top. Apparently knowing that I would not squirt the kitten if it was not on the counter.

On the Dog Whisper I saw a dog who was obsessed with placing it's toys in geometric patterns.

I think that animals are observing the changes in the world and are trying to figure out why the changes are happening. Some even appear to believe it is the humans destroying the environment and are taking action based on that belief.
