Old News Is No News: Mark Pilkington’s Mirage Men
Full disclosure: I haven’t read the book. This is not a book review; it’s about the idea of the book’s premise, from what I’ve been gleaning so far. From what I’ve been reading about Pilkington’s book Mirage Men, the thesis is that UFOs are creations of our government. There are no “real” UFOs; just machines and stories about encounters made by man to confuse its citizenry and mask secret operations.
This is old news. But beyond this simplistic “revelation” about UFOs is the fact the government has been getting away with murder, both figuratively and literally, using UFOs as a convenient smoke screen. Isn’t anyone curious about what’s been hidden from us? Put aside “beliefs” about UFOs, they exist, they don’t exist, aliens are real, aliens are fantasy — just forget all that for now. Ask yourselves what is it the government is doing behind those flying saucers are here! scenarios.
A danger with books like this is that the mainstream culture will think it’s been offered an explanation for all those crazy UFO stories, and move on. Even some within the fringes who study UFOs will accept this. Including those “new thugs” that pose as UFO investigators or researchers but are part debunker-skeptic, part dilettante. Meanwhile, the government continues to perform often illegal maneuvers around us, and no one’s questioning that. In fact, stepping beyond the line of questioning will get you quickly slapped with a Tin Foil Hat sticker and you’re shoved over to the kook side. Mention chemtrails and it’s all over.
Okay, Pilkington and fans, UFOs don’t exist. Forgetting obviously that UFO means unidentified object and not alien from mars in a flying saucer … oh never mind. Sigh. Yet we still have, say, spheres showing up in our skies — these have been photographed dozens of times over — what are they? Whose are they? What are they doing? What about the video of a sphere I saw years ago, taken by a local witness, that seemed to disappear but upon close examination was till there, merely cloaked to near invisibility? What was the thing spraying onto the residences — and people! — below; for spraying some kind of mist like substance it was. Doesn’t anyone want to know about those kinds of things?
Let’s take my own missing time experiences, that occurred within a UFO context. And let’s say, for argument, that this “UFO context” was government created. If so — missing time, UFO — then that means our government was doing something obviously immoral, unethical, and illegal. Which is frightening. For that means, if it’s not UFOs, not mental abberation (shared by two people, two and possibly three, different times), then what was it? Why the persistence of a UFO based setting? WHERE WERE WE FOR ALL THOSE MISSING HOURS??!!
But see, now we’re entering MILAB territory, which is paranoid kook fringe fantasy, so no one is going to listen to that, because UFOs don’t exist, the government just uses that to . . . you see how this all becomes a circling back of absolutely no answers at all, while maintaining cover-ups? In typical cosmic joker trickster fashion, the idea of the government using UFOs as a cover for their shadow projects is a cover for the government’s covering up . . . because not many are questioning beyond the initial cover.
On Trickster’s Realm for BoA: Orange Orb Confirmations
(This is my latest Trickster’s Realm column for Tim Binnall’s BoA site.)
An intriguing aspect of alien encounter stories is the shared experience element. There have been many times when I’ve heard a story that, no matter how unusual, how weird, and unbelievable someone’s account may seem, it often turns out that others have had similar, if not the same, kind of experience.
I’ve had UFO experiences going back to childhood, but my sighting of an orange orb in Oregon in the 1980s is, for some reason yet to be discovered, the catalyst for my journey into the world of esoterica, I couldn’t find any references to similar sightings. No books on UFOs or aviation mentioned basket ball sized, glowing from within, seemingly sentient and telepathic orange orbs. Yet I saw one. Furthermore, I experienced missing time the day/night of the sighting. (Other weird events occurred around this sighting as well.)
I’ve seen several UFOs since that sighting, but never anything like that orange orb. Although something odd did happen last year, as I wrote on UFO Magazine’s site:
An Orange Orb Blip
Something slightly odd and startling happened the other day. It was around 5:30 in the afternoon. I was relaxing on the sofa, not asleep but just in that semi-drowsy, pleasant light trance state. I had a short little dream — a dreamlet, you could call it — but I was awake on some level at the same time.
I “dreamt” I had a strong urge to go outside and look at the sky full of stars. (this is something I do almost every evening) and I walk out onto the path to the sidewalk, and scan the dark sky. I hear a voice inside my head, or more like a telepathic nudge, to turn around and look towards the south. I do, and see, very high up, a bright orange light, which is rotating. As far away as it is, and as small as it is — like a large, bright star — I can tell it’s revolving. When I see this orange “star” I’m very scared, and I can feel my stomach drop with cold dread.
I wake up abruptly, feeling very uneasy. With the sighting of the orange object I again am aware of a telepathic message; this one tells me that I know exactly what it is I saw years ago, and to stop playing games. I assume it meant stop playing games with myself, but I had a sense it might have meant with it as well, whatever “it” is.
I’m not sure why I feel it’s important to keep track of episodes like this, but I’m sure one of the many purposes doing this serves is that is simply makes me feel better. No closer to any mystery but I don’t think that’s the point any more. Acknowledging these weird little moments and adding them to the collection of pieces gives the illusion of work, of study. It’s calming somehow. It’s also empowering; once you call it, reclaim the name of something, it’s power diminishes.
And maybe, as has been said by Forteans and esoteric explorers, the Trickster or whatever you want to call it is alerted to our interest and responds. When we start noticing “it,” “it” starts to notice us back.
Every time I come across an account of an orange UFO I get excited and am curious to discover if the sighting was anything like mine so many years ago.
A few years ago, we began to see reports of orange orb or spheres; they’re still coming in. Most of these seem to be the lanterns used in celebrations that have become popular but as many researches have pointed out, this doesn’t explain much. The orange lantern explanation just doesn’t fit a lot of these sightings.
There have been a lot of reports of orange colored lights in the sky; not the floating type lanterns, not the basket ball sized orb I saw, but star like, or like the lights of a plane.
Interesting and sometimes they share some similarities to what I saw but, not the same thing.
Until the “Dark Presence” episode of UFO Hunters. That episode had to do with orange UFOs. Not small, airplane type lights, stars, or lanterns, but like the orb I saw. Some of the orbs witnesses described were green or other colors, but orange seemed to be the main color. I responded to that episode, again on the UFO Magazine blog:
There are many parallels to my orange orb sighting . . . and the ones discussed in the UFO Hunters episode. Many witnesses reported feelings of dread, of fear, though some had experienced feelings of elation, upon seeing these orbs. I had both: feelings of a happy intrigue when I first saw the orb, and a real goofy, almost psychedelic response right after seeing it. . . I also had the most terrifying dreams of my life right after seeing the orb. These dreams were always the same: I’m paralyzed inside a brilliant white beam of light that is so bright I can almost see through things. There is something huge above me, some kind of object. My husband is nearby but has been taken from me and I’m screaming for him, for “them” to return us to. . . or get us out of, wherever the hell we are.
Finally, I had found others who described the same kind of object and events that I experienced, as I wrote:
These orbs were described by witnesses as being basket ball sized, or even larger, like a beach ball. That’s exactly how I’ve been describing the size of the orb I saw for all these years. Witnesses also said they felt a premonition, or some kind of telepathic communication between the orb and themselves; I also had that experience when I first saw the orb. I had glanced up having noticed the orb, which I estimated to be about a mile away. I had the distinct feeling it was waiting for me, and as soon as I thought “What the hell is that thing?” it zoomed right to me, following us along the road. (Witnesses also reported they were followed by the orbs.) As we turned the corner to go home (our house was right around the corner) the orb stopped for a moment above a house across the road from us, then just sank down, “landing” in the backyard. Similar behavior was reported by witnesses on the UFO Hunters episode.
Witnesses also described the orb as being lit from within, or at least giving that appearance. The orb I saw had the same effect; no lights around it, or on it, but it seemed to glow from inside. Witnesses also reported missing time.
Strange to come across so many witnesses with such similar descriptions and so many years apart!
Comments that followed to my piece on UFO Magazine’s blog were interesting. Like this one from “Susan” who saw a large orange orb in 1975, and Raechel from MRIPA (a paranormal investigative group that was featured in the UFO Hunters episode.) Raechel wrote:
Jason and I did do an investigation with Indiana – MUFON back in July of this year. It was a woman and her family who live up in northern Indiana who witnessed one large red orb (basketball size) and a multitude of smaller white orbs (softball size) in the woods that surrounded her house. She too explained a feeling of “awe” at first and than fear. . . . she stated that the orb actually entered through her front door and left a sticky residue on her door. Her dog no longer likes to go out side at night, and when Jason and I were asking her questions, we both noticed that there was missing information that didn’t fit in sequence. When I say this, I do not mean that she was telling us false information, what she was telling us was the truth. Her story to this day still has not altered any. What I’m saying is the way she was talking and her actions fit into that of people that have experienced “missing time.” She couldn’t recall several hours of the 2 nights that she experienced seeing these orbs.
The part about “missing information that didn’t fit…” parallels my own experience. To this day, my husband and I find we disagree, get confused, argue, and misremember parts of that experience. It’s like we have to retrace the same thing every time, and sometimes, new information seems to reveal itself as we try to work through what happened.
This past year I’ve been trying to recall the missing parts of this experience through dreams, meditation, and intent. I don’t know if I’ll ever use hypnosis as a tool but I doubt it very much.
I still don’t know what that orb was, why it was, or what really happened. It is — I don’t know if comforting is quite the word to use — but it is confirming to know that others have also experienced these orbs.

UFO Hunters Dark Presence Episode post on UFO Magainze Blog
Orange Orbs and Nervous Wolves: UFO Hunter’s “Dark Presence”
This was posted a few days ago after I watched the UFO HUNTERS episode on orange orb UFOs. I’ve had my own orange orb encounter many years ago in Oregon that paralleled what witnesses in the UFO HUNTERS program said they experienced:
Watching this episode of UFO Hunters (”Dark Presence”) about the orange orb UFOs seen in recent months was an intensely personal experience for me because of my own orange orb sighting.
It seems that witnesses have been seeing orange (and sometimes green or other colored) orb UFOs. These are not orbs as in spirit orbs, which are very different, but spheres — round objects — that are craft, or machine, or something “nuts and bolts.”
These sightings are occurring now, but go back a ways as well. One woman who appeared on the program, her identity disguised, saw one of these orbs when she was a child. My own sighting took place over twenty-five years ago in Eugene, Oregon.
There are many parallels to my orange orb sighting — and the sighting that started me on my path of exploration into UFOs — and the ones discussed in the UFO Hunters episode. Many witnesses reported feelings of dread, of fear, though some had experienced feelings of elation, upon seeing these orbs. I had both: feelings of a happy intrigue when I first saw the orb, and a real goofy, almost psychedelic response right after seeing it. And yet, even though I actually walked to the front door after going inside, with the intent of going back outside to look for the orb, I couldn’t do it. I couldn’t open the door. I remember thinking how odd it was that here I just saw an incredible thing — experienced an incredible thing — yet couldn’t make myself go outside to look further.
People have asked me if there were lights on this thing, and I’ve always described it as a real, physical craft (as opposed to a cloud, or a spirit orb, etc.) and no lights on it, or around it, but lit from within. Witnesses on UFO Hunters described their orbs the same way.
Missing time was mentioned by at least one witness; I also experienced missing time in connection with this orb, as did my husband.
On this last point, there’s something very strange. To this day, after countless discussions, my husband and I still differ on some things. These points of disagreement were brought up again as we were watching UFO Hunters. He insisted we saw the orange orb when we lived on Hilyard street… I had to remind him of the detail of that sighting, which happened when we were on Friendly street. At first he was almost angry, denying it, but then he seemed to then remember that yes, we were living on Friendly street when we saw the orange orb, but the missing time happened when we were on Hilyard, during a different UFO sighting. But neither of us can remember where we were coming from when we saw the orb. Where had we been? Why can’t we remember? It was dark when we saw the orb; where would we be coming from in that direction? We were on our way in back to town when we saw the orange orb– so where were we? We don’t know. Does this mean we have had three episodes of missing time? (We did have a sighting of a silver craft, hovering about a hundred feet above a field in the same area around the same time; there are some cover memories and other odd things about that sighting as well.)
Recently, I posted on my blog The Orange Orb my experiment of trying to remember these missing time events. Maybe with focused intent, through dreams and other methods, I can uncover what happened.
When I had my orb sighting all those years ago, I read every book I could find on UFOs. I found all kinds of fascinating information, but nothing that came close to describing what I saw. Yet UFO Hunters showed us that these orb sightings have been experienced by many, and are still happening.
Was the orb I saw the same kind of orb talked about in UFO Hunters? Sounds like it. While the time line is different — mine was over twenty-five years ago, and, from what I could find at the time, didn’t seem to match up with any reports — there were witnesses who’d seen orbs long ago, as well as more recently.
Lots of speculation on what the orbs are of course from witnesses and researchers, but we can’t say for sure. What did I see that night? An orange orb lit from within, the size of a beach ball, that followed me, seemed to be waiting for me, could read my thoughts. Where did it come from, who made it and why, what did it want — those are questions I have no answer for, even after all these years.
Even after all the research I’ve done into UFOs from so many perspectives, I am still reluctant to come out and say “it was aliens.” I don’t know it was aliens. But what else could it be? Around and around we go. Government ops? Quite possible, and yet, just as many things wrong with that theory as there are right. Mental illness? Sigh. Well, then that means both my husband and I are mentally ill, and so are hundreds of thousands of people all over the world. So really, all other explanations are fantastic — which does not mean impossible, just fantastic. Time travelers, time slips, fairies, aliens, tulpas … whatever, something damn stange that we have yet to figure out.
Wolf Dream
I had the following dream last night, after watching the UFO Hunters episode and writing the above entry. The dream didn’t have anything to do with UFOs or my orb experience in specifics, but when I woke up, my first thought about the dream was that it was connected to the orange orb sighting. The dream had a definite UFO vibe:
Nervous Wolves
It’s nighttime, and very, very dark. Ink black. I’m outside the house I live in, which is a white, small little building — there is only an upstairs, like a small apartment, that is reached by a narrow flight of stairs. The stairs are inside, in other words, they’re surrounded by walls. There’s nothing underneath, just the covered stairs leading up to the apartment, which sits on a little hill. This place is surrounded by woods, the trees are bare. It’s impossible to see into the woods since it is so dark. For some reason, I’m outside the house/apartment. I’m surrounded by my “pets” which are wolves, and wolf hybrids. The wolves are very nervous, agitated. Even though these animals are “mine” we have an odd relationship. I find myself wondering why I have wolf hybrids as pets, since I don’t think people should own such animals (neither wolves, or, hybrids) and I would never own such beings. Yet I’ve ended up with them somehow. They are my protectors in some ways, yet are also unpredictable. I’m a little wary around them.
I’m also concerned, they’re skinny. I wonder why, have I not been feeding them properly? Then again, some of them have just sort of shown up from “out there” and joined us. I feel responsible for them.
So here we are, out in the ink black night, starless, on a grayish hill of parched grass. Something awful has happened in the woods, many of the wolves come running up, and we all run up the stairs into the house. There is a man in uniform kneeling down inside, working on something, some kind of control panel or machine or something. He’s human and kind of creepy. I tell him he has to do something, that there’s some kind of creature out there attacking my wolves. “Maybe a rabid raccoon, I don’t know, something, but we have to kill it” I say. He ignores me, he’s pretty cold. There’s also something about another man who kind of sneaks off, thinking I didn’t notice. I also wonder what the hell these guys are doing in this, “my” house, but I also know that they’re in charge. Since they’re in charge, I demand they protect us, fix things. But they don’t.
All I care about are my wolves, and myself of course. . . just save us, get us the hell out of here, and take care of that nasty thing out there that’s trying to hurt these poor wolves who aren’t hurting anyone.

That’s the end of the dream, or, all I remember.
Paranormal Investigators From Episode Respond
I was delighted to find that Rachel, with the paranormal investigator group appearing in the UFO Hunter’s episode, left the following comment to my post:
Hi! I am Rachel, the case manager for MRIPA, that was on the UFO Hunters episode “Dark Presence.” I stumbled across this page through a google search and enjoyed reading the posts. Even though Jason and I got about 5 minutes on the show, what was aired was not even a glimpse of the indepth conversation that Pat, Bill, Kevin, Jason, and I had in what the orbs could be. Spirit orbs are definitely NOT the same thing as what you Regan are describing in your experiences. Unfortunately because of the show we have received some emails asking how we could think that orbs are only spirit related. This is where I have to say “sigh.”
MRIPA investigates all things paranormal: UFOs all the way to ancient legends. I really appreciate you writing about your experiences because I think it is very important that people share their stories because if it’s just not to get more information out there at least it will let others know who have had similar experiences that they are not alone.
Going back to “spirit orbs” Jason and I are very cautious when people claim to have captured “spirit orbs” on photographs. The truth is most of the pictures that we receive are the following: dust, water droplets/condensation, insects, and what’s most unfortunate is when we receive pictures that have been altered to resemble something paranormal. But the pictures that we shared on the UFO Hunters show were small orbs of energy which resemble a small ring of electricity. These are not as common as some may think. We also try to explain that just because these orbs of energy are present it does not mean that a spirit/ghost is present. It can increase the possibility, but more than not it’s related to a natural earthly phenomena.
But I will state again, what you have experienced is something completely different from “spirit orbs.” Jason and I did do an investigation with Indiana – MUFON back in July of this year. It was a woman and her family who live up in northern Indiana who witnessed one large red orb (basketball size) and a multitude of smaller white orbs (softball size) in the woods that surrounded her house. She too explained a feeling of “awe” at first and than fear. In fact she stated that the orb actually entered through her front door and left a sticky residue on her door.
One claim that she stated that on the 2 nights that she saw these orbs she felt tired and was inclined to want to go to sleep. Anyways, I did a complete write up of this case for our website and Indiana MUFON, if you would like to read about it. Of course we didn’t capture anything, but than if what is being seen is of an intelligent source – maybe they are aware when we are looking and know not to make an appearance. (kind of gives me goose bumps just thinking about that)
Anyways, I just wanted to say thank you for sharing your experiences. I think if anything it will help people realize that something is happening that we cannot fully explain. Have a wonderful rest of your day and week!
Sincerely,
Rachel
Taken Up By An Eagle
I’ve been working on exploring memories and dreams, trying to get closer to what “really” happened with these experiences. Missing time, UFOs, and other high strangeness; what is behind these events? For example: missing time. Where was I (or we, since two, and recently it’s been considered, possibly three, missing time events experienced by my husband as well,) so where were we, what was happening?! during these missing time times. The world didn’t stop while we were — where ever we were. The point is, my mind doesn’t remember but obviously things were still happening around me, us. . . the question is of course, what?
I was working on my Orange Orb column for UFO Magazine the other night (wrote a full article on one memory “dream” that I call the “bedroom radiator alien” but followed where that led me, to an earlier memory, of the following “dream.” ) Like my patio alien “dream” I had around the same age (but in a different house) this memory has stayed with me for some fifty years or so, as vivid as the day it happened. It wasn’t a dream and yet, it must have been, since it couldn’t have literally happened:
I’m flat on my back in the dead center of my bed, which I remember as being large, and white; white sheets, and just a white covering. The bedroom is lit up very bright; which I wonder at: if I’m supposed to be asleep why are all the lights on?
I am so full of happiness!!!! I have an expectant joy that is so wonderful; I know “they” are coming. I stare up at the ceiling in anticipation. The ceiling opens up, two halves move up and outwards, revealing the starry night sky.
A giant eagle — so huge it’s almost the size of the open ceiling — swoops down from the sky, to my left, and down into the bedroom, right above me. It’s come to take me up. As the eagle flies into the room I turn and see my parents, my grandmother, and some others, standing in the doorway. They seem to be stuck there; they aren’t coming into the room. They’re just watching. I’m very glad to see my father but am a little confused; he doesn’t live with us and I don’t understand why or how it is he’s here.
The eagle comes, it’s so fantastic!
It wasn’t until last night that I realized there is a Thunderbird and Mothman connection to this experience. At age five or so I didn’t know what Thunderbirds were, nor did I know anything about Mothman of course.
I started doing some research about eagles in terms of UFO accounts and before I knew it, I had found all kinds of interesting things; things that will take awhile to explore.
One thing I found that I haven’t read fully but did skim is an article for the E.L.F. Infested Spaces (ELFIS) ‘zine by Jeffrey Lewis: Idiot Stick – Whitley Strieber’s Encounters. It is very esoteric and I only mention it because of the thinking done by Lewis on the nature of dreams, memories, symbolism and connections in the context of UFOs, aliens and entities. Frankly I don’t know what to make of it but as I say, I haven’t given it the attention needed. (There is much there; this is a site that will take you in many directions. . . )

Mentioned, I think, somewhere on the Elfis site, was something about the myth of Leda and the Swan; I also found a passing reference to the Greek myth in Erik Davis’s 1993 My Favorite Martians: A UFO Epistomology — this myth in context of UFO experiences has been addressed by UFO and esoteric researchers before. The comparison of this theme of a god like being or entity (Zeus), disguised as an animal that is familiar to humans, coming from the skies to have sexual relations with a human female to alien-UFO abduction and contactee accounts is an obvious one to explore in terms of alien-UFO stories.
I am not suggesting my memory had anything to do with anything so literal or sexual — but the comparisons and connections, all those glittering threads that reveal themselves when going tumbling down the rabbit hole of esoterica — are natural ones to follow for Fortean junkies like myself.
All that aside, bird and winged – being imagery is strong in UFO accounts, and that includes Mothman accounts.

The popular film Twilight, from the equally popular book, was filmed in Oregon and Washington state. I haven’t had a chance to read the books yet, but plan to, though I don’t think I’ll see the movie; seems too young and commercial for my tastes. I’ll probably end up watching it on television some late night. . .
I am a vampire fan however, and loved the Anne Rice books, as well as the movie made from her series. I’m a huge fan of the HBO series True Blood, also taken from a book series. (new episodes begin in June.)
One of the scariest vampire films: The 2000 film Shadow of the Vampire with John Malcovich and William Dafore. (and Eddie Izzard!)
A Looming and Heavy Energy on the Coast
This is the current Trickster’s Realm column for Tim Binnall’s Binnall of America. TR is a bi-monthly column I write for Binnall of America.
My friend “Lola” lives in the coast range in Oregon. Lola has a life long history of paranormal activity in her family including not just ghosts but UFOs, Bigfoot and other paranormal and psychic phenomena. These things seem to follow the family; particularly the women. There are some paranormal clichés involved: events happen more to the females in the family, some members have Native American blood, and at least one house is on Native American hunting grounds.
Lola, her husband and their children moved a few years ago to their present home in the coast range. We’ve visited them several times and it’s a great place; out in the country, on acres of land by a creek. The night sky is magnificent and far from city light pollution. There is something odd about the place however, and that is the space between their house and the shop. The shop is a large building; it could easily be a house onto itself. It’s placed in an odd spot; very close to the house; there’s only about six feet between the shop and the house, which makes for a dark, cold, narrow passage way to navigate through.
In the narrow dark space between house and shop there is a persistent feeling of something very heavy and large, as well as depressed, close by. Neither one of the children (young teens) will go out there at night, and they’re no wimps. They’re used to living in the country; many family members live in rural areas; they’re no strangers to the country. Lola doesn’t like to go out there at night either, and really, no one does, including myself or my husband. It’s not only the space between the buildings that has this heavy cold feeling, but the shop itself. The remodel work going on hasn’t seemed to improve these feelings.
The feeling I get when in this space is one of extreme heaviness, a depression as well as an oppression, of something very, very large. It’s a living, conscious entity but I haven’t been able to call it “human,” or “animal” — it seems to be both, as odd as that sounds.
The other day George had mentioned that he’s always felt it’s an animal spirit, and that this energy is one of great depression due to abuse. Right before he said that to me, I was thinking about this energy, trying to get closer to what it is. I received a strong vibration of mistreatment, but as to animal or human, it was still vague. It seemed wrapped up altogether. Then George said, out of the blue, “I’ve always felt very strongly that this animal energy had a lot of abuse energy surrounding it.”
Lola’s bedroom faces the shop, and their bedroom widow looks directly onto the building. She keeps the curtains closed at all times, because of the negative energy she feels coming from the building. There are strange claw marks on their bedroom window, high up and no one can figure out how they got there, or what made them. Whatever it was, had to jump up very high to make them; and why would it? It’s as if something was trying to claw its way into the bedroom. It’s possible a bear was looking in the window, (they do have a black bear problem in the area) still, the bear would have had to have been an exceptionally large one to reach that high.
Lola has had other strange experiences; one afternoon, while lying on their bed, she saw an entity appear beside her. The entity, in Lola’s own words, “Wasn’t human, but was trying to pass itself off as human.” Lola was clear it was a female entity, with a pale, almost white face, and a “wig” of dark brown hair cut short. Lola doesn’t know if this has anything to do with the energy between the buildings; but she does say this entity wasn’t a positive one.
The other day, Lola was working in the herb patch outside her kitchen, which is a few feet from the shop. She told me she kept getting a strong image of something dead buried nearby; something large and animal like.
There is a sad history to the place; a horse that the previous owners kept on the property was terribly neglected, and they left the animal on the property when Lola and her family bought the place. The poor thing suffered a great deal for years but fortunately, Lola’s family has worked closely with the horse, who is now very happy and healthy, and they’ve since bought other horses to join the family. The area where the horses hang out seems fine; but near this shop area, it’s another feeling altogether. And I’ve noticed the horses don’t go near there either, or in the upper field that faces Lola’s bedroom.
Something seems to have left an imprint; either a series of events, or one specific being, be it human or animal. Whatever it is, has been felt by many visitors.
Leviathan Synchronicities
My husband Jim is writing a novel; it’s a conspiracy/sci-fi/paranormal tinged book, and it’s wonderful to have him read me the latest every week. It’s tenativley titled Product A recent scene in his book has the main character remembering something that happened when he was a child. Staying at the beach with his mother, he is aware of a creature in need. A giant, whale/octopus/leviathan kind of creature, preternatural, that calls to him. The character goes to the creature, who is injured, meets a girl; through a series of telepathic Fortean type events, the creature manages to return back into the ocean. Part of the strangeness of this event was the character’s repression of such a vivid, poignant, eerrie encounter and his dealing with the recovered memory. Something about this passage was very moving; I could picture the creature, with its one, huge orb of an eye, on the wet sand. Jim wrote this at the same time I started this blog but he hadn’t known about the blog or its title. (I was reminded of the movie Whale Rider and how moved I was watching the scene where the whale washes up on the beach.)
Sunday, a fin whale beached itself here on the Oregon coast at Devil’s Elbow State Park. The smell from the whale made its way up and over Highway 101 and gruesome, gratuitious poachers cut away parts of the whale, so getting the body off the beach was a priority. There was also the “gross out” factor; as Jim Rice with the Marine Mammal Stranding Network remarked:
“There seems to be a lot of concern about grossing people out.”
a quote that the Register Guard felt important enough to display in large font as a header, highlighting the idea that “grossing people out” was the concern, and justification, to quickly bury the whale rather than wait and tow it out to sea.
The problem was how to move the body; blowing it up had already been tried in 1970, when a whale beached itself on a Florence beach. Naturally that turned out to be an unpleasant mistake. This time, the twon decided burying the body was a goog choice. A giant hole was excuavated, the body rolled into it, after scientists had their way slicing away body parts to study why and how it died.
Jim remarked that this all seemed very sad; wrong somehow, the body belonged in the sea, not in a hole. It just seems wrong to bury a sea creature on land. However, the authorities believed the ocean conditions unfavorable to send teh body out:
The early afternoon’s high tide had failed to carry the whale back out to sea, and U.S. Coast Guard officials deemed the rough surf at Heceta Head too treacherous to try towing it out via some kind of boat.
Instead, the whale was buried in a hole, with this memorial:
Parks workers dumped lime on the carcass as the dozers carved out a little extra space for its tail, then filled in the hole. As they worked, Kelly Lucas, whose husband, Dennis, is the manager of Heceta Head Scenic Viewpoint, fashioned a handmade cross from two sticks bound by yellow caution tape. She then stuffed the stems of a bouquet of daffodils she picked from her garden into the cross and laid it against some driftwood.
“We named him Jonah,” she said.

The Creature of Conser Lake in Ivan T. Sanderson’s “Abominable Snowmen…”
In my book The Ghost of Conser Lake, (unpublished) I cite an interesting passage from Ivan T. Sanderson’s book Abominable Snowmen about the creature. (You can read a previous section of the book here. Mention of “Flix,” the Bigfoot like being that appeared in Millersburg, Oregon in the late 1950s -early 1960s, is one of those interesting high strangeness BHM (big hairy monster) cases. Here’s a section from my book, with added comments in parentheses.
Flix Gets Around
Flix made the news for a good two years. He was seen off and on in the area during that time. Clarence Starr, owner of the Owl Cafe in Albany at the time, told Westby (Betty Westby, the reporter who wrote several articles about Flix for the
- Democrat Albany Herald
newspaper) that the monster “had trampled down a lot of mint on his farm and that he will not be able to harvest much of his crop.”
An elderly woman “who came from one of the early pioneer families,” the paper noted, walked into theGreater Albanyoffice to give her story of her encounter with Flix:
“That monster was in our pasture last night. My neighbor took a shot at it. He found some blood on the ground, so he thinks he hit it. We saw its tracks, and the women in our neighborhood are scared to go anywhere at night or even sit on porches or leave the doors or windows open. I think he sheriff an state police should Hunt this creature down before it kills someone.”
The newspaper tried to explain to the woman a “big white cow” had recently escaped from its owner’s truck and that this is what she saw, but “she refused to believe our explanation.”
Mrs. Penning in Devers-Conner, about 30 miles south of Millersburg, told Betty Westby she heard “dripping sounds,” even though it was August. It is interesting that Mrs. Penning described the “dripping” sound; remember that Flix’s footsteps were also described as “squishy.” Looking out her living room window she saw a “large, light form,” hurrying away, and heard a “low pitched cry that seems to start from its toes, tapering off to a squeal like a pig’s.” Penning also fond fingerprints on her bedroom window, and Westby spectacled that they were web shaped, due to the four fingered, spread-out shape of the prints.
Three years later, the story of the Creature of Conser Lake was still news. In an article by Martin Clark, Albany Journal staff writer, he comments on writer Keith Sosebe’s upcoming talk on the “monster.”
Leaping from the shadow of a deep gully, the thing stood fully 7 feet tall in the ghostly moonlight. Petrified with mingled horror and curiosity, the young people sat motionless in their car. Suddenly, the apparition took at enormous leap over the gully and slipped away trough a tangle of boughs.”
By October, Flix, or a similar creature, was reported in Stanton, Oregon, 30 miles from Millersburg. (Oregon) It seems that Flix moved within an approximate 30 mile radius. This is assuming it was the same creature of course. Calls came into the Stayton police station of an “eight foot tall hairy monster,” and monster hunters were quick to look for the creature. Fortunately the police stopped a group of teens, armed with guns and beer, who decided to go monster hunting, before they could do any damage.
A Herd of Flixes?
Cryptozoologist and biologist Ivan T. Sanderson discussed the Conser Lake monster briefly in his book Abominable Snowmen:Legend Come to Life, citing a small item that appeared in the January, 1961 edition of FATE magazine, reporting that the “monster” was “still on the loose.” Sanderson also writes in Abominable Snowmen that a source wrote Sanderson in October of 1960, insisting that there was not only the one Flix, but several “Flixes” in the area. According to Sanderson’s unnamed friend, there were more than one BHM, several in fact, and fingerprint as well as footprint casts were taken. Referring to Flix, the letter writer described the creature:
he makes extremely high pitched sounds. his hair or fur had slight glow in the dark . . .feet make a squishy sound. Has been seen at day and night and seen to disappear into the lake.”
This last part about Flix disappearing into the lake gives some support to the theory about BHM, and/or Bigfoot, living underground. Sanderson also supported this idea. The letter writer mentions a “Hal Starr” who has had contact with more than one of these creatures. In the correspondence sent to Sanderson about the Conser lake “monster,”
the letter writer reports that “Creatures” (italics mine) were still being sighted on a farmer’s farm.” The name given was Hal Starr; is this the owner of the Owl Cafe mentioned earlier?( Cal,or Hal?)
Flix himself verified Sanderson’s source that there was more than one creature. The creature told psychic Jane Waterby (Waterby was a friend of Betty Westby’s and the two visited the lake to try and communicate with Flix.) that he wasn’t the only creature of his kind:
I am sorry for you alien friend. What are you called?”
“I am called Flix. there are many like me, but I am the one called Flix.”
Another typical yet frustrating detail Sanderson’s friend gives is the writer’s comment that a “finger print [was] lifted off a house window including a plaster cast of a foot print.” Sanderson’s friend also said he had physical evidence:
“Have personal taped accounts of this creature . . . this includes photographs.”
But no photographs, fingerprints, footprints or recordings have turned up. As with much of UFO, cryptid and Fortean phenomena, evidence is as elusive as the phenomena itself.
